wear your helmet

this morning i decided to run at the gym because the skies weren't looking all that inviting and besides, i didn't want to wind up in oz being there were tornado warnings running across the bottom of the tv.  when i got to the gym, my friend, krissy, was already running on the treadmill when i hopped on to the left of her, and the older guy trio was walking and talking alongside her on the right.  so krissy and i ran and chatted.  we ran and chatted.  we haven't seen each other in a few weeks.  so we ran and chatted.  we ran and chatted some more.  we ran faster and kept chatting.  a few times i felt myself drifting to the right, moving toward her, but i caught myself.
you know what happened when the girl is holding on.  well, that was me.  i drifted so far that i went too far to the right, off the treadmill with my foot but i took hold of the handles and i kept holding on.

somehow i never fell off .  krissy was leaning over to me and was trying to save me by pulling the red "in case of emergency" string (which i forgot about), and the older guy trio was looking over at us in disbelief.  those guys were concerned, i'm sure.  completely entertained, most certainly.
i was able to slow down the crazy conveyor belt, hop back on, push the speed back up to 6.2, my heart rate now up to 3000, and we kept running.  we were laughing our asses off as we ran.  and i was laughing so hard i could hardly breathe.
then the voice came from the older guy clan to krissy.  "hey, what's in that water bottle?  vodka?"  i was already bright red in the face from running, and then add some more color from embarrassment.  but it was all good.  we were laughing (and sweating) as much as we were running, i think the word is guffawing.  krissy finished her run and left me in good hands, with the three older guys who now had a pretty funny story to share with their non-gym friends.
i figured that being i didn't wind up on a gurney i would run another mile and a half to get to five miles.  one of the guys stopped by me to chat as he was leaving.  remarkably, he told me the story of how he fell off the treadmill last week and his friend turned to look at him with "big eyes".  he survived, as did i.  and he even complimented me, "i was impressed with your ability to stay on, and hold on, and keep got this thing going fast."  thank goodness i didn't fly off!
and of course, he was impressed with the appearance of krissy's cape as she tried to rescue me.  every time i replay it in my head, i picture myself holding on and trying to get back up, then i laugh out loud....again...krissy said she's been laughing all day too.    i am crying laughing as i type this.  from the other room jeff hears me laughing and just said, "it's good to laugh at yourself, nik."
maybe it is safer to run outside, even with that crazy ol' mother nature.  but today it was funnier to run inside.

mother nature even wound up smiling.....
